The Marmore Falls is one of the most attractive sceneries. It is 531 ft in height and plunges with a three-jump drop into the Nera River. Its beauty has always been celebrated by painters, poets and famous figures, such as Virgil, Galilei, Corot, lord Byron, by writers such as Alfieri and Andersen, and many European sovereigns. It used to be one of the principal and most charming destinatsions of the Grand Tour.
It was conceived by Consul M. Curio Dentato in 271 BC in an attempt to drain the swampy Rieti plain by diverting the Velino into the Nera (Cava Curiana). Its course was later improved, above all in the 18th century by order of Pope Pius VI with the diagonal cut.

The area around the Waterfall features a Visitors’ centre providing guided tours on the paths leading up to the Rock.

At Marmore Falls can be accessed from two distinct points, namely the Lower Belvedere, or the Upper Belvedere. The first is the lower part of the waterfall, where you can observe, in full, the three jumps from the river Velino into the Nera River, from here you have a complete view of the waterfall. The second is the upper part, formed by a spectacular and panoramic view of the first jump.

The paths of the waterfall

Path 1
Description: historical journey of the waterfall, connects the Lower Belvedere to the Upper Belvedere, where we find the “Specola”, porch built in 1781 by Pope Pius VI. About half of the path we find the tunnel that leads to the “balcony of lovers.” It can be covered (and then embarked) in both directions: from the lower to the upper Belvedere and vice versa. Path not accessible during the months of December and January.

Path 2
Description: the route, via stairs and bridges, reaches the heart of the Waterfall. Spectacular view of the second and third jump of the waterfall. The trail is particularly suitable for children and allows the visitor to get in close contact with the waterfall. The starting point is from the Botanical Garden located within the area of the Lower Belvedere. Path not accessible during the months of December and January.

Path 3
Description: particularly suitable for children, is the route that offers striking views over the gorge of the Nera River with the opportunity to admire the evolution of the canoeing and rafting enthusiasts. The starting point is the Botanical Garden, located within the area of the Lower Belvedere. Path not accessible during the months of December and January.

Path 4
Description: a path with steps going up the mountain Pennarossa, reaching two vantage points with breathtaking frontal view of the waterfall. It is the quintessential tourist trail, accessible throughout the year, allowing an overall view of the three jumps, it is recommended to lovers of photography who wish to have a total view of the waterfall. To get to the starting point you need to cross the highway “Valnerina” (Lower Belvedere: you have to cross the highway where there is control of ticket called “Byron”) and gain entry called “Pennarossa”

Path 5
Description: If you want to see breathtaking views, the path n. 5 is for you, it offers panoramic views over the Nera Valley and Waterfall, it allows the display to the load receptacles of water, the former power station, as well as the consolidation of the wells of the cliff. Starting point: at locations Campacci Marmore (Upper Belvedere), near the ticket office. Path not accessible during the months of December and January.
